Garden Tools and Compost

This afternoon I went to the garden with Kelly (motivation in pairs!) to grab some of the good compost that was delivered to the garden this week. It is evident that more people have been to the garden to clean out from last season and/or to start to their plot for the 2010 season.

I first wandered to my plot so that I could check out the few things that are in there from last season, along with choosing a place to plant an onion that had begun to root a few weeks ago at Tera's, was brought to Providence last week and thrown in to a pot with my roommate's aloe plant. Since I'm learning and am not sure how plot #10 will be configured, I called Tera to ask for her advice. While on the phone with her she tried to identify the plant that was in the plot from last season and is pretty sure it's a red chard of some variety. We'll see what happens with that as the season progresses. I planted the onion just behind the chard and hope that it continues to grow. Kelly was working on taking a few early season photos of her plot and then wandered over to check mine. She caught me on the phone, getting that important advice from Tera!

It was then time to tackle the compost. I went back towards the shed with Kelly, grabbed a shovel and the wheel barrow and started to fill it up. Kelly was laughing at me because I wasn't using the proper technique with the shovel. She finally said, "Jen you do know how to use a shovel with your foot, right?" I said, "Oh yeah, but I don't want to get my shoes dirty." (I decided on the refill that my shoes were going to get dirty or I was going to be there all night.)

I dumped the compost into plot #10 and did minimal spreading. I figured I need to get back over there this week to pick out some of the sticks and maybe some of the shells before I mix it up with the other soil and make it nice and level again.

As I was working on that, Kelly started to transplant some chamomile from her plot to the newly built community herb garden. She's got that all planned out and will save many of us from using space in our plots for commonly used and (well loved herbs)!

Update on seed tray... still no sign of growth, I'm hoping that lots is happening below the soil and one of these days in the very near future, I'm going to be shocked when I take a peek!

The birthday celebration is nearly over (or maybe it is now)... my wonderful roommates gave me my birthday present yesterday,
since they both wanted to be here to give it to me. They couldn't have picked a better gift! Garden tools! Garden Gloves! Garden Bag! The best part of all of that? They are GREEN!
